- Aspartame or APM is
the name for an artificial, non-saccharide sweetener, aspartyl-
phenylalanine-1-methyl ester; i.e., a methyl ester of the dipeptide of
the amino acids aspartic acid and phenylalanine.
- Aspartame is the
methyl ester of the dipeptide of the natural amino acids L-aspartic acid
and L-phenylalanine.
- It is 180 times as
sweet as sugar in typical concentrations, without the high energy value
of sugar.
- Approximately 10% of
aspartame is broken down into methanol in the small
intestine.
- Most of the
methanol is absorbed and quickly converted into formaldehyde.
- The metabolism of
aspartame does not damage the body because:1.The quantity of methanol
produced is too small to disrupt normal physiological processes;
- 2.Methanol and
formaldehyde are natural by-products of human metabolism and are safely
processed by various enzymes;
- 3.There is
more methanol in some natural fruit juices and alcoholic beverages than
is derived from aspartame ingestion.
- Non calorie
sweetener market in India is pegged at Rs. 80 crores and growing at 20 %
per year.
- The potential demand
is much more.
- India is consuming
around 180 lac tons of sugar every year.
- Even 1 % of this
translates into 900 tons of non calorie sweeteners valued at Rs 180
Crore.
- Aspartame is, by
far, the most dangerous substance on the market that is added to
foods.
- Aspartame accounts
for over 75 percent of the adverse reactions to food additives reported
to the US Food and Drug Administration.
- Aspartame also
significantly damages the body. Like phenylalanine, aspartame is a
highly excitatory neurotransmitter.
- Aspartame is
commonly used in diet soft drinks, and is often provided as a table
condiment.
- It is also used in
some brands of chewable vitamin supplements and common in many
sugar-free chewing gums.
- Aspartame, a
low-calorie sweetener with a clean, sweet, taste, provides many benefits
including aiding in weight control as a sugar substitute, and extending
and enhancing flavors.
